I'm just one of the out-of-focus guys

I love movies in general, but music films are definitely my favourite and the most common of my DVD purchases. I'll only buy films I can watch over and over again, and I find this genre lends itself to this quite nicely.

Movies about music just seem to draw me in, in a more compulsive or sentimental way. I mean, who doesn't think about the bus scene in Almost Famous every time they hear Tiny Dancer?

This is one of my top 5 films of all time. I will never grow tired of watching it. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs is a stroke of casting genius..."The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone else when we're uncool". Jason Lee as Jeff Bebe makes my heart swoon with his beardy, beautiful, clueless arrogance..."from the very beginning we said I'm the front man and your the guitarist with mystique, that's the dynamic we agreed on!...You know what I do? I connect.  I get people off. I look for the one guy who isn't getting off, and I make him get off." He's incendiary too man.

Speaking of top 5's. High Fidelity. Number 1. With a bullet. I went to Chicago and stalked as many set locations as I could find. Sadly there is no 'Championship Vinyl' but we went to Reckless Records on the same block, on record store day, so that was kinda cool. I love everything about this movie. The cast, the soundtrack, the dialogue, Lisa Bonet's cameo...'she's kind of Sheryl-Crowish crossed with a post-Partridge Family pre-L.A. Law Susan Dey kinda thing'. It's just full of goodness. John Cusack's delivery of the 'what really matters' speech is perfection and possibly my favourite rant of the entire film. Enjoy.

Also, who can't go a halloween without watching Rocky Horror Picture Show? Without singing Sweet Transvestite whilst secretly wishing you looked as hot in drag as Tim Curry? Or having a halloween party based solely around viewing and singing the entire movie (with props)? At the very least blasting the soundtrack on a loop for the entire evening? Oh, I know you're out there...I see you shiver with antici...pation!

If you love campy music movies and have not seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Velvet Goldmine, you must do so immediately. If you have, I suggest a re-watch as soon as possible. I own them both on VHS, I'll hook you up. Both so, so good. Amazing soundtracks, great casts, men in drag - what more could you ask for really?

This list barely scratches the surface, but I feel like it's a good start. I will list the other more-than-strong contenders below.

Have I missed any? Agree, disagree? Inquiring minds want to know. Be sure to enjoy these with a little Smarties and Popcorn on the side.

Let's end with a little Ewan McGregor full frontal, shall we?

  1. It's a little more well-known, but it's still awesome: the scene in High Fidelity where Jack Black rants at the customer shopping for Stevie Wonder. Cathartic to anyone who's ever worked in retail, even if all that negative energy is directed at the wrong person.

For music *documentaries*, Pearl Jam 20 is outstanding, as is It Might Get Loud.
